If a bank markets itself as safe and secure, it better pay attention to detail in its operations and accounting.  Likewise, if a consumer products company sells an image of youth, energy and activity, it better support its staff in finding time to exercise.  Customers can see through a false brand promise and will reject its lack of authenticity.  In such cases, advertising dollars are worse than wasted – they may actually drive customers away.
